Local Fluctuations and Local Observers in Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics
نویسنده
چکیده
The distribution function associated with a classical gas at equilibrium is considered. We prove that apart from a factorisable multiplier, the distribution function is fully determined by the correlations among local momenta fluctuations. Using this result we discuss the conditions which enable idealised local observers, who are immersed in the gas and form a part of it, to determine the distribution ‘from within’. This analysis sheds light on two views on thermodynamic equilibrium, the ‘ergodic’ and the ‘thermodynamic limit’ schools, and the relations between them. It also provides an outline for a new definition of equilibrium that is weaker than full ergodicity. Finally, we briefly discuss the possibility that the distribution can be determined by external observers. r 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Non-equilibrium driving of biophysical processes is believed to enable their robust functioning despite the presence of thermal fluctuations and other sources of disorder. متن کاملFluctuations in shear-jammed states: A statistical ensemble approach
Granular matter exists out of thermal equilibrium, i.e. it is athermal. While conventional equilibrium statistical mechanics is not useful for characterizing granular materials, the idea of constructing a statistical ensemble analogous to its equilibrium counterpart to describe static granular matter was proposed by Edwards and Oakshott more than two decades ago. Recent years have seen several ...

In this study, using the non-local elasticity theory, the buckling and vibration analysis of triple- walled ZnO piezoelectric Timoshenko beam on elastic Pasternak foundation is analytically investigated under magneto-electro-thermo-mechanical loadings. Using the Timoshenko beam free body diagram, the equilibrium equation of Timoshenko nano-beam model is obtained and solved by Navier’s method fo...

We consider a generalized statistical mechanics model for the creation process of cosmic rays which takes into account local temperature fluctuations. This model yields Tsallis statistics for the cosmic ray spectrum. It predicts an entropic index q given by q = 11/9 at largest energies (equivalent to a spectral index of α = 5/2), and an effective temperature given by 59TH , where kTH ≈ 180 MeV ...
